The Brave Afro-American Girl

Holleena was a sweet little child who was as innocent as any child. Holleena was an African girl who lived in America. She lived with her mother, as her father had deserted her mother when Holleena was too young. When Holleena grew a little older, she began going to school. Everyone in the school mistreated her and teased her that she was black. Holleena wept and complained but no one listened to her. When Holleena complained to her mother, she told her, “My sweet child, we are too weak and too poor to do anything. It has been always like that here in America.” Poor Holleena felt bad, but she decided to do something. She grew up and studied well. She wrote poems, stories and essays to show the black people’s feelings and suffering. When the white people read her poems and stories, they felt ashamed of their behaviour.
