The Clever Daughter-in-Law

A village headman had a daughter-in-law. One day, he asked his daughter-in-law, “How much do you think I spent on your wedding?” The daughter-in-law replied, “Well, you spent equal to the cost of one bag of rice.” The headman was annoyed at this answer but did not say anything. One day, they were going somewhere, when they saw a funeral procession. The daughter-in-law asked whether the funeral was for one man or many men. The headman was puzzled and asked what she meant. The daughter-in-law replied that when someone died, his whole family suffered. Impressed by her answer, the headman asked her why she had said that he had spent only the cost of a bag of rice on her wedding. The daughter-in-law replied, “The actual ritual needed only a few hundred rupees. The rest was spent on show.” The headman had a hearty laugh at this.
