A woodcutter lived in a village. He made a living by cutting trees from the forest on the outskirts of the village. The forest was full of many kinds of trees. There were medicinal trees, fruit trees, tall trees, short trees, small trees and huge trees. But there was only one crooked tree. It had a twisted trunk. What a pity that it grew in the midst of tall trees with straight trunks and branches that seemed to touch the sky. Every day, the tall trees would make fun of him. “Who’s the odd one out?” they would say. Then they would laugh loudly. One day, the woodcutter reached the part of the forest where the tall trees stood. He thought, “What fine trees! Let us cut them all.” Then he began cutting the trees. But the crooked tree was of no use to them. So they spared him.
