The Crypt of Civilization

The world’s first time capsule was set under the foundation of Phoebe Hearst Memorial Hall at Oglethorpe University in Georgia. An assortment of artifacts and documents and items used as in 1940, with the exception of gold and silver, were stored inside steel receptacles with glass linings, filled with inert gas to prevent oxidation and aging. The walls were lined with porcelain enamel plates embedded in waterproof pitch. A snapshot of human culture and civilization and knowledge was collected on microfilm. The Crypt also contains the voice recordings of historical the figures. It was sealed shut on May 25, 1940, setting the date of opening as 8113 AD.
