Derek was on his way to the market. Suddenly, he stopped. Something glistened under the big stone near the silver birch. He went closer and saw that it was a shiny silver necklace. He picked it up and slipped it into his pocket. Once, home, Derek said to his mother, “Mom, I found the necklace near a tree. Why don’t you try it on?” Derek’s mother tried on the necklace. Bit by bit, she became stiff and would not move or talk. She had turned into a silver statue. Derek cried in horror. Just then, his father came home. Derek’s father examined the statue and then, slowly removed the silver necklace. Immediately, his mother came back to life. Derek’s father said, “Derek, this necklace had a curse! It could have hurt your mother badly. Don’t ever pick up things from the road.” Then, they both went to the river and threw the necklace into the deep waters.
