The Deaf Family

Long ago, there was a family of a man, his wife and their daughter. Sadly, all three of them were deaf. One evening, the man took his donkey down to the river to get him to drink some water. There were many herdsmen who had brought their cattle to drink water. One of the herdsmen said, “Hey, listen, our cattle are drinking here. Let them drink first; you can bring your donkey later.” As the man was deaf, he did not understand what the herdsman said and replied, “I am sorry; my donkey is not for sale.” They wondered what was wrong with him. The herdsmen said, “We don’t care whether your donkey is for sale or not; we don’t want him to drink water with our cattle.” The man looked up and said, “Don’t you hear that my donkey is not for sale?” Now, the herdsmen were sure that the man was mad and so they decided to stay quiet. The donkey drank his fill and they went back home.

What You Hear

After returning home, the man went into the kitchen and said to his wife, “Would you believe it? Today, some traders insisted on buying my donkey but I told them that he was not for sale.” The wife looked at him and being deaf she hadn’t heard even a word of what he had said and she replied, “Well, if you want to give me a divorce, I won’t spend another day with you. I am going to my parents’ house.” So, she left him and, as she was collecting her things to go, their daughter came in. She said to her daughter, “Do you know after all these years, your father has told me to leave this home and go away.” The daughter, feeling shy, said, “You are my parents, and if you want me to get married, I won’t go against your wishes.” So, the moral of the story is that a person hears what he or she wants to hear.
