Meanwhile Bhagat Singh had reached Calcutta and Azad had gone to Mathura. After a short time the revolutionaries regrouped at Agra where they had set up secret headquarter and a bomb making factory.
As the above mentioned bills were directly against the leftist militant youth and the trade unionists, the ‘Hindustan Socialist Republican Army’ drew up a plan to act. Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt were to play lead roles in the planned act.
When the Bill were made public the people fiercely opposed them. There were demonstrations and the protest marches all over the country. The leftist revolutionaries took full advantage of it and demonstrated their support to the public anger by historic act.
8th April, 1929—As preplanned Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt entered the Central Assembly which is now known as Sansad Bhavan or Parliament House, using visitor passes. They sat in the visitor’s gallery above the hall. This was the day when the chairman was to announce the passing of the Bills into Acts by the special power vested in the Viceroy of India.
As soon as the Chairman rose to announce the verdict of the Viceroy, Bhagat Singh unrolled the newspaper he was holding to reveal two bombs. He threw one into the Assembly Hall aimed behind the empty benches. A deafening explosion followed. Smoke filled the hall. Within a few second another bomb exploded at the same spot. Then, Batukeshwar Dutt threw handbills into the hall. He had a wad of those bills. The bills announced.
‘Hindustan Socialist Republican Army’
beware!
‘Explosions are needed to make the deaf ears hear with these words of the French revolutionary…’
And they started raising slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ and ‘Down with Colonialism’.
Meanwhile, the police appeared there and the two revolutionaries offered themselves for arrest. The police again went after the revolutionary youth. Several hideouts of the revolutionaries in U.P. and Punjab were raided. The bomb factories were seized and the large arrests were made. Many innocent people also went to jail on mere suspicion.
Azad had already gone underground and was well away from the reach of the police.
All the arrested youth were tried and their cases were decided in a short time. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death in Sanders Murder case. In Assembly bombing case they got life imprisonment which applied on Batukeshwar Dutt. He was not involved in Sanders case.
