The Flyers of Papantla

The-Flyers-of-Papntla

The Flyers of Papantla are a group of 5 men from the city of Papantla in Mexico.

Do you know: The ritual these men perform is said to have formed in the 1200’s.

The Flyers of Papantla originated from Totonaca legends, in which the men send a message to the god of fertility, asking for rain in their drought-ridden land. Today, the custom involves one man standing without any safety atop a 23-metre-high pole playing the drum and flute, while 4 men are secured to the top with a rope tied to their feet, representing the 5 elements of the indigenous world.
