The Flying Trunk

Once upon a time, a young man had a magical flying trunk. He decided to explore the world in it. So, he climbed into the trunk. The trunk soared high up into the sky and landed near a beautiful town.

In the town, the young man saw a big castle with high windows. He was told that a princess lived in that castle. The curious young man flew in his trunk and entered the castle from the window. The princess was surprised.

The young man told her his own story. Then, he told her many stories about lakes and mountains. These magical stories made the princess very happy and she fell in love with the young man. She told him to come the next day to meet her parents.

The next day, the young man went to the castle again. The Queen said to him, “Tell us a story with a moral.”

“A story that is funny, too,” the King added.

The young man said, “Once there was a bundle of matches. They were very proud that they had been cut from a large pine tree. Often, they talked among themselves how sad it was to be living with such common things in the kitchen.

The iron pot lamented, ‘I have been used for cooking since I came into the world. I have never seen the outside world!’

The tinderbox said angrily, ‘Come on! We have a lot of fun every evening, so why think of the outside world?’

Then, the saucepan suggested smartly, ‘Let’s do something new today; let’s sing!’

Everybody in the kitchen loved the idea. The plates were so happy that they rattled with pleasure. Not wanting to be left behind, the fire-tongs said, ‘Let us dance!’ And then everybody sang and danced.

The matches thought that only common people behaved as foolishly as the utensils were behaving. Just as they were thinking of what to do next, the maid came into the kitchen. Everyone became quiet.

The maid took the matches and lighted them. The matches thought, ‘Now everyone will see how important we are. How much light we give…’ Even before they could finish their thought, their light went out…”

“What a wonderful story!” exclaimed the Queen, “I feel as if I were really in the kitchen!” Impressed with the young man, the King and the Queen decided that he was the right person to marry their daughter. Their marriage was celebrated with pomp and show.
