Once, Mulla Nasruddin was chatting with a philosopher at the village study centre. After a while, Mulla said, “I am going to get a drink of water.” The philosopher said, “Add one for me, too.” Mulla came back and exclaimed, “After I had my drink, I tried to have a drink for you, too, but we were already full!” The philosopher was impressed with Mulla’s wit. So, he made an appointment with Mulla to have a scholarly discussion. When the day came, the philosopher dropped by Mulla’s house, but he wasn’t at home. The philosopher angrily wrote, ‘Fool’ on Mulla’s door, and left. When Mulla saw this, he quickly darted off to the philosopher’s house. “Forgive my error,” Mulla said, “I forgot about our appointment today. But when I saw that you had written your name on my door, I immediately remembered you. And I came here as fast as I could.” The ashamed philosopher apologised for his behaviour.
