Mary studied in a boarding school. She was eagerly waiting for her birthday, when she would get gifts from so many people. One day, in a carnival, a fortune-teller prophesied, “Mary, you will get something beautiful and shiny on your birthday!” “Beautiful and shiny…? What could that be?” She tried to guess. Then, suddenly she realised happily, “I’ll get a jewel on my birthday.” She opened everyone’s gifts excitedly. Sadly, there wasn’t a single jewel in the packets. Her parents sent her a pretty dress and granny a colourful sweater. Aunt Martina had sent her shoes. Mary was disappointed. Just then, Sonia, her friend informed her, “Mary, a ball will be held in school.” Mary looked at the gifts and squealed in delight, “Oh! The dress and the sweater are beautiful and the shoes are shiny! They are perfect for the coming ball! The fortune-teller was right.”
