The Great Blue Hole is the largest underwater sinkhole located 100 km off the coast of Belize. It is circular in shape: 300 metres in diameter and 125-metre deep. It was originally formed as a limestone cave during the last glacial period when sea levels were much lower. As the ocean began to rise, the cave system flooded and eventually collapsed creating a ‘vertical cave’ in the ocean. Divers flock to the area to see the geological formations that now lie in the ocean’s depths. The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO.
