A wicked hermit was living as a guest in a rich man’s house. One day, the rich man had to hide a box of gold coins. Thinking that the hermit had no interest in wealth and worldly pleasures, he buried the gold coins in the hermit’s room. But when the rich man left, the hermit dug up the gold coins and hid them in a bundle of straw. Next day, the hermit told the rich man that he had to go for a pilgrimage, and left his house with the bundle of straw, saying that he would use it as bedding. The Bodhisattva, who was passing by, saw this and smelt something fishy. He asked the rich man to check if his gold coins were safe. The rich man went to the room and found the gold coins missing. he declared the hermit a cheat and got him imprisoned.
Moral: Greed is an imperfection that defiles the mind
