Once, a first-grade teacher held a contest in her class. She asked the children to draw a thanksgiving picture. The children in her class came from poor neighbourhood. She wanted to see whom they would thank. The children drew all sorts of pictures from big cakes to balloons. But the teacher was taken aback when she saw the picture Douglas, one of the quietest and the poorest boy in the class, had drawn. It was a simple hand! She asked Douglas, “Whose hand is this?” Douglas remained quiet, as usual. The class was curious to know about the strange image. “This is the hand of God because He gives us food,” said one child. “No. This is of a farmer,” said another, “because he rears turkeys.” Finally, when the kids went out of the class for lunch, the teacher called Douglas aside and asked again whose hand it was. “It is your hand, Teacher,” he mumbled. She recalled that frequently at recess she used to give homemade doughnuts to children. But it meant so much to Douglas!
