Adam lived with his old aunt in a village by the mountains. Adam’s aunt had warned him never to go to the forest. One day, Adam went out for a walk with his dog Maggy in the forest. When Adam was about to turn back, he heard someone say, “Come here, you naughty boy.” Terrified, Adam tried to run. Suddenly a tree branch shot out and blocked his path. Strong winds blew; mud and dry leaves whirled in the air and the entire forest screeched in delight. The roots of a tree extended like hands and held Adam’s feet. Maggy bit the roots and set Adam free. Then, bats surrounded Adam and Maggy. Adam picked a huge stick up and hit the bats with it. Some of them scattered and others stuck to the stick. Adam pulled Maggy and they both ran and ran until they reached home. Often, on a moonless night, Adam hears a voice say, “Come here, you naughty boy.”
