A holy man lived in a temple. Many devotees would offer him money, garments and gold. The holy man sold these and became rich. He kept his purse with him always and never trusted anyone. A swindler wanted to rob the holy man. He went to the holy man and said, “Sir, please accept me as your disciple.” The holy man agreed. The swindler pretended to be very humble and the holy man was impressed. One day, a disciple from a nearby village invited the holy man to his house. Accompanied by the swindler, the holy man left for the neighbouring village. On the way, they saw a river. The holy man said, “Son, stay here and guard my robe while I have a bath.” When the holy man returned, the swindler had vanished with his money. He realised that he had lost everything because he had trusted a stranger.
