The farm lay quiet at night near the mountains. There was a faint rustle but no one awoke, not even the dogs. On the window-sill was a large jar of honey that Gladys had forgotten to put away. A large, dark shape came to the window, took the jar and vanished. When Gladys came in the morning to milk the cow, there was no sign of the jar. ‘Oh dear! the mistress will be angry!’ she thought, searching for it everywhere. And Farmer Timber’s wife was really angry! She yelled at poor Gladys, who wept in the barn. Jacko, the farm dog, tugged her dress. She wondered why he was pulling her and finally went with him. Under a large oak tree was a bear, fast asleep, holding the empty jar! Gladys quietly picked up the jar and ran back.
