There was a farmer. Once he had to go across a river. There was no bridge. Only a small boat stood moored at the bank. The farmer had a lion, a bale of grass and a goat to take along. The boat could not carry more than two individuals or items at a time. Thus, the farmer could take across only one of his animals or bale on one trip across. He faced a problem. If he took the lion across, the goat would eat the grass behind. Similarly, if he took the bale, the lion could eat the goat at this end. The same situation would arise on the other end.
The farmer thought over it. At last, his intelligence found a solution. First, he took the goat across. He returned with the boat and took across the lion. But he did not leave the lion and the goat together at the other end. He brought along the goat back, left it there and went across with the bale of grass. He then came back and took the goat across.
