The King and His Beauty

The-King-and-His-Beauty

Once king Krishnadeva Raya was besotted with his own beauty. One day, Tenali Raman visited to see and talk to the king. “I have visited you earlier in the day when you were asleep,” said Tenali, “You were more handsome then.” “How could my looks decline within a few hours?” said the king. He turned to his guards and said, “Did I look better in the morning?” “You looked the same,” said the king’s guards. Then Tenali said, “Their vision was imperfect and we’ll prove it to you. Bring a bowl of water,” said Tenali. A bowl of water was brought. Tenali asked the guards to study it closely and then leave the room. When they had gone, he removed half a spoonful of water from the bowl. Then the guards were called back in. “Is there any change in the bowl of water?” asked Raman. “None,” said the guards. “They cannot see that the water has diminished,” said Tenali, “just as they cannot see that your beauty has deteriorated.”
