Once, a king wanted to reach heaven in his mortal form. He went to a sage for help. The sage helped him to realise his dream. He performed a religious ceremony through which the king started his ascent to heaven. But Indra, the chief of gods, was not happy at this. So, he uttered some magical words and the king started falling back to earth. The sage saw this and uttered, “Let the king be where he is.” Now, the king was stuck between heaven and earth. To keep him in that position, the sage propped a pole under the king. Eventually, it became a coconut tree and the king’s head its fruit. The fibre that we see around the coconut is the king’s beard. One can see eyes on the coconut as well which are the king’s eyes.
