“Did you hear the beast roaring?” asked the worried Lion King. “I did, Sir,” said Damanaka, “Please let me find out what the danger is. Then you will know who your loyal servants are. But, Sir, would you please give something to us so that we may be strong enough to defend you?” The Lion King gave his kill to Damanaka, who happily went off with the meat. He and Karataka had a feast. But Karataka wondered as to how they would deal with a strange and terrible beast. Damanaka laughed, “It’s a bull, Karataka! No wild beast!” “Is that so?” said the puzzled Karataka. “Then why not just tell the King?” “No! It is better he remains frightened. Then we will be able to fool him!” said Damanaka, “If the master becomes comfortable, we will be like the cat that was starved.”
