Gopi was a milkmaid on a farm. She was a very pretty girl and wanted to have a farm of her own too some day. She milked the two cows and then after the farm supply was given, she took the rest of the milk to the market to sell. The farmer was very kind and allowed her to keep some of the milk for sale.
Gopi was always daydreaming about the day she would be rich. As she walked to the market one day with the pot of milk, she thought of all the money she would earn that day.
“I’ll buy some hens with it,” she thought, “They’ll lay eggs. Then I can sell the eggs and get some more money. I’ll have enough with the sale of milk and eggs then to buy a goat!”
Gopi went along happily thinking of the goat that would have two kids. She’d play with the kids and then, when they were older, she would sell the goats.
“My, my! Two goats will fetch me a tidy sum of money. I will be able to buy a cow of my own then! I’ll have more milk to sell and get rich!”
The idea of being rich made her think of getting some new clothes. “Silk!” she thought, “I’ll look so grand in my new clothes!”
That made her think. She couldn’t walk around on these dusty streets if she was wearing grand silken clothes!
“I must have a horse and live in a great mansion!” she decided, “And if anyone comes close to me, the horse will ensure they are kept away. If it is a skittish horse, it will kick out!” she thought and tried to see what it would feel like if the horse kicked out.
She had forgotten that she was not on a horse, but walking along with a pot of milk! As she kicked out, she stumbled. CRASH! The pot had fallen down and broken, with the milk spilt all over the street.
Her dream broke along with the pot, and the horse and the mansion vanished as did the cow and the goats and the hens!
“Oh, dear!” she thought as she looked at the broken pot, “I’ll have to do something more than just dream if I want my horse and my mansion!”
And after that day, Gopi worked really hard to make her dream come true.
