The Mouse Merchant

One day, a young man named Gyaani overheard a king’s adviser tell his friend, “See that dead mouse; even with that, one can become a millionaire!” Gyaani picked up the dead mouse and sold it to a shopkeeper to feed his cat. With the money, Gyaani bought sweets and sold them to flower sellers. A storm struck the city. Gyaani picked up the branches of trees strewn around the king’s garden and sold them to a potter. The potter paid him good money and Gyaani opened a refreshment shop. Weeks later, a foreign ship anchored at the port. Gyaani collected good commission from the merchants and became rich. Then, Gyaani visited the king’s adviser and thanked him for his advice. As he narrated his story, the adviser realised Gyaani’s Buddha charita (character) and married his daughter to him.

Moral: Hard work always pays.
