Old Mrs Walters had forgotten her umbrella at the Dorrit’s farm. It lay in a corner just outside the kitchen window. Somehow, no one noticed it, except a pair of sparrows who were looking for a place to build their nest! The two little birds flew busily to and fro, bringing twigs and cotton and little bits and pieces for their nest. Soon they had settled happily into their new home. One day, Mrs Walters visited the farm again, carrying a bright green umbrella. She said that she had lost her old one. “But I’m glad!” she told Mrs Dorrit, “Otherwise I’d never have got a new one!” They walked in the yard as Mrs Dorrit picked some of her fine tomatoes to give Mrs Walters. “Oh, look! There’s my old umbrella!” exclaimed Mrs Walters, catching sight of it. Mrs Dorrit laughed and uttered, “You’ve given those sparrows a home!”
