The Nose Knows (Science Experiments)

Materials Required:
l Asparagus
l Bathroom
Yourself

Procedure:

  1. The next time you have asparagus for dinner, note its distinctive odour and taste, and eat a generous helping.
  2. When you go to the bathroom the next morning, do you notice the same asparagus smell? Why does this happen when other foods that you eat do not produce their own odour in your urine?

This Is What Happens:
A substance’s odour is produced by molecules that your nose detects. The molecules that produce the smell of asparagus enter your body when you eat the vegetable, and are absorbed through your small intestine. However, your body does not use these particular molecules and they are passed, unchanged, into your kidneys. They finally leave your body in your urine.
