The Old Woman and the Physician

An old woman had become blind. She called a physician to heal her. In the presence of witnesses, she told the physician, “I shall pay you a sum of money only if you cure me of my blindness, else nothing.” The physician agreed. On every visit, the physician would apply medicine on her eyes and would steal something from her house. When the physician had taken everything, he healed the woman completely. The woman saw that all her goods were missing. When the physician demanded money, the old woman refused. This argument led them to the court. The old woman said to the judge, “I did promise to give him a sum of money, but I am still blind as I cannot see all the things that I had in my house before I became blind. Therefore, why should I pay him anything?”
