The Old Woman’s Soup

An old woman went to the woods. She dug up some small roots to cook, and dug up a large root as well. She boiled a pot full of roots and had the soup for dinner. At midnight, a hollow voice roared in forest, “My roots! I want my roots!” Then, a stomping noise came from the edge of the forest. The hollow voice said, “I want my roots!” The old woman shuddered. Then, the stomping sound came from outside the cottage; the hollow voice repeated, “I want my roots!” The old woman double-locked the front door. Suddenly, the door burst open and the old woman saw that a huge tree with an ugly face and branches like outstretched hands stood at her doorway. It said, “I want my roots!” The old woman shouted, “I ate your roots!” Then, she flung blessed oil on him. He dissolved into a big puddle, there and then.
