Once a rich man and a poor man owned a common field. They sowed it at the same time. The poor man’s labour prospered and his seeds grew, but the rich man’s seed did not grow. Out of jealousy, the rich man claimed that part of the field where the grain had sprung up. The poor man protested, but the rich man said that he should come into the field the next day for the final settlement. The poor man went home and the rich man dug a deep trench in the poor man’s portion and placed his son in it saying, “When I come here tomorrow and ask whose field this is, say it is the rich man’s field.” Then he covered up his son with soil and went home.
Next morning, when they both arrived at the field, the rich man cried, “O God! whose field is this?” “The rich man’s,” cried a voice from the midst of the field. But the Lord was watching everything. He revealed the truth magically and cursed the rich man’s son to stay in the earth forever. The rich man’s son became a mole and so the mole always hides himself from daylight.
