Once, a wealthy man and his son liked to collect rare works of art. One day, the son went to war and died saving another soldier. One day, a young man approached the father, “I am the soldier for whom your son gave up his life.” He held out a portrait of the son painted by him. The emotional father thanked the soldier. The father died a few months later. His estate was put up for auction. The portrait of the son was also placed for the auction. The auctioneer said, “Start the bidding with the son’s portrait.” No one wanted the portrait. But the auctioneer persisted. Finally, the poor gardener of the father and son, said, “I’ll give $10.” As no one else bid, the painting went to him. A man shouted, “Continue the auction!” But the auctioneer said, “Only the son’s portrait was to be auctioned. Whoever bought the portrait would inherit the entire estate.”
Moral: Goodness rewards goodness.
