The Plain of Megalithic Jars

The Plain of Jars is a megalithic archaeological landscape in Laos and is dated to the Iron Age (500 BC to 500 AD) and is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia. More than 90 jar sites with 3,000 jars lying around have been identified. Local legend says that it was created by a race of giants for their king to store their wine; some say they were used for collecting rain water; they could also have been the sites of secondary burials, a practice in which the corpse is left to decompose, a practice that has been common in Thailand and Laos.
