The Prison without Locks

On reaching mountain Himyar, Hatim found Hamir in a cage, which was suspended from a tree. The door of the cage was not locked, nor was he tied down. Hatim was curious to know why Hamir did not move out of the cage and free himself, and for how long he had been there? Hamir told Hatim that he had been there for the past three years, waiting for a noble soul to come and rescue him. Every time he tried to step out of the cage, he would feel an excruciating pain in his limbs that would render him powerless. And as soon as he stepped back inside, the pain would leave him. Thus he was compelled to remain inside the cage. Hatim Tai was touched by Hamir’s story. He said, “You have suffered and learnt your lesson. I cannot move on without rescuing you, so let this be my immediate mission!”
