The Rainbow Tree

Two little rabbits, Tim and Davy, lived under a tree on the edge of a forest. They were the silliest pair of rabbits ever. Whenever anyone tried to make them understand something sensible, they always understood it all wrong.
On the tree lived an old owl who was very sensible. He tried to teach the two rabbits some sense always. He told them fruits normally fell off trees and they could eat them then. But the two fellows thought fruits were brought by the wind and dropped in the forest.
When he told them that rabbits can hop, birds can fly, Tim and Davy thought he was pulling their legs. They had big ears.
“If we flap our ears like the birds, I am sure we can fly too!” said the rabbits.
One day, it rained in the morning, but very soon the sun came out. The rabbits watched in fascination as a rainbow came out.

They had never seen a rainbow in their life. It was fantastic! What lovely colours! They kept watching it till it faded.
After a while, the owl saw the two rabbits walking round and round the tree as if searching for something. He watched them for quite some time wondering what they were up to.
“What are you two looking for?” he called out.
“Mr Owl, this is a Rainbow Tree. We are trying to find out from where the rainbow came,” said Tim.
“You silly fellows!” said the owl, “There is no such thing as a Rainbow Tree. Rainbows don’t grow on trees.”
“You know, Mr Owl; everyone in the forest says you are very wise, but you really don’t know things,” said Davy looking at him.

The owl realised that they were so stupid that there was no use telling them anything truly about rainbows. So he told them, “Boys, you have to wait till it rains again. Then the rain fairy will help a new rainbow to grow on the tree.”
Tim and Davy accepted this as the truth and happily decided to wait for the next rain. After a few days, it rained again. Tim and Davy were delighted. They had as he watched them making fools of themselves.
It was not possible, he realised, to teach any sense to fellows who were determined to believe only in their own viewpoints and ways.
Moral: Do not waste time with foolish people.
