The raven let out a mournful cry. Pete heard him and wondered, ‘Oh! Why is he crying so?’ Just then, Pete’s mother called, “Pete, hurry! Your grandfather has fallen off the stairs!” As he ran down, Pete saw his father helping his grandfather onto the bed. At night, Pete crept into his grandfather’s room to kiss him goodnight. A raven, perched on the window sill, let out a hoarse cry. Almost at once, Pete heard the screech of wheels and looked out. A hearse had stopped and four strange-looking men, dressed in black cloaks, got off. He saw them loading a bundle into the hearse and drive off. Pete ran to call his parents but as they all went out to look, there was no hearse. Once inside, his father glanced at his grandfather. He said sadly, “Son, Grandpa is no more. Say goodbye to him.” Pete looked at the window. The raven had disappeared.
