The Runaway Princess

Princess Henrietta had a very bad habit. She liked to run away. She ran away when her tutor came to teach her. She ran away when she was called for lunch. She ran away when she had to meet visitors.
The King and the Queen finally decided to get a governess who would make sure that she would learn to behave properly and not simply vanish every time there was something to be done.
And so Miss Kelly arrived at the palace. No one knew that Miss Kelly was a witch! She was small, plump and apple-cheeked and she smiled at everyone happily. She carried a white umbrella with pink roses on it.
When it was time for lessons, Miss Kelly hung her umbrella on the back of Princess Henrietta’s chair. While Miss Kelly looked in the cupboard for the books, Henrietta tried to sneak out of the door. She found she couldn’t get up! So, she had to do her lessons all morning.
That day, there were guests for lunch. Henrietta was dressed in a yellow frock, but she wanted to go to the stables and look at her pony. Miss Kelly waved her umbrella and suddenly it began to rain, so Henrietta decided to stay indoors.
Miss Kelly found Henrietta putting on a pair of jeans the next morning.

“I’ll come with you for a walk, dear,” she announced and, to Henrietta’s horror, she had a Nature ramble that day with Miss Kelly!
Soon princess Henrietta found that there was no way she could run away from Miss Kelly. So she always seemed to be there.
‘This is dreadful!’ thought the princess, ‘I must find a way to get rid of Miss Kelly!’
Henrietta finally came up with a wonderful idea. She sent an anonymous letter to Miss Kelly telling her that her aunt was in hospital and wished to see her. Miss Kelly knew at once that this was a trick, because she did not have an aunt! However, she decided to play up to Henrietta’s scheme. She packed her bags and walked down the road to the railway station.
Henrietta watched her walk away from the palace and set off gleefully to play near the pond. No lessons now and no Miss Kelly! But a strange thing happened at the pond. She found a plump white duck swimming in it.

“Not here, you naughty girl!” said the duck.
Henrietta ran to the stables and there was a new white pony in the stalls. He shook his head at her and neighed, “Nay, girl, back to your lessons!”
Henrietta was so frightened that she ran down the road after Miss Kelly.
“Come back, Miss Kelly!” she yelled, but there was no sign of her. Suddenly out of the bright blue sky Miss Kelly drifted down with her white umbrella open!
“Well, Henrietta! Are you running away again?” smiled Miss Kelly.

Henrietta laughed and shook her head, “No, Miss Kelly! Never again!”
