Fanny lost something almost every day. She lost not only her pencils, erasers, sharpeners but also her water bottle, her lunch box, her history book, the pretty hair clips and finally she lost her new red shoes!
Mummy made a plan to find things. She gave a ball of red wool to Fanny.
“Tie one end to your bedpost, Fanny. Whenever you get up to go somewhere, tie a knot on it and another knot when you stop somewhere and wrap the wool around something. That way, you’ll know where you have been. Then, when something is lost, we’ll go back the way you have moved and find it,” explained Mummy. So poor Fanny went around the house tying knots and weaving the twine all over the furniture. She felt like a spider and, at the end of the day, the whole house was looking like a spider’s web!
There was someone who was watching Fanny quietly. She did not know about it. It was the Fairy who looked after the lost things. She decided it was time for her to do something now.
Next morning when Fanny got up, she saw the little Memory Fairy sitting cross-legged on her pillow.
“I am the Memory Fairy! I take care of all the things people lose or forget. I can help you remember the things. But first make a list of the things you use daily,” said the fairy.
Fanny immediately prepared the list.

“Now we’ll find a place for each thing and you’ll put it right back there after you have used it. That is the secret of never forgetting things!” explained the Memory Fairy.
“Oh, good! I think I’ll start doing that!” said the joyful Fanny. And so, from the next day onwards, everyone was surprised to see that Fanny had begun to remember things and not to lose them.
