The Silver Swan

Once upon a time, a Prince who had gone hunting got lost. In his city, there lived a pretty girl called Lynnet who loved the Prince. She decided to look for him.
Lynnet wandered over the hill and the dale, through deserts and forests till she came to a cave in a mountain. There seemed to be no one around, so she went in.
Lynnet found that the cave was lavishly furnished. Inside there were two enormous beds, one with a golden quilt and one with a silver quilt. A young man lay asleep on one bed. When she went closer, she found it was the Prince.
Lynnet tried to wake him up but he was in an enchanted sleep. She hid herself to see who the owners of this huge cave were. At night two giant sisters came in and the cave shook with their enormous feet.
The younger one called out to a silver swan and he came flying. Immediately, the Prince awoke. The sisters fed him and the younger one asked him to marry her. The Prince refused. Angrily, the sisters placed a spell on him and he fell asleep again. The sisters slept too and in the morning they went off.

The next morning, Lynnet called the silver swan and the Prince awoke. He was astonished to see Lynnet there.
“Let’s run away from here,” he suggested.
But the silver swan told them that the enchantment of the sisters was very strong. They would catch them and kill them. They should find out where the sisters went every morning. Lynnet asked the Prince to act as if he would marry the younger sister; only then she would tell him the secret.
The silver swan flew away and when the sisters returned, the Prince was asleep. This time when they woke him up, he agreed to marry the younger sister. She was very happy. That day, Prince asked her where they went every day.
“We have to guard the speckled egg during the day,” she explained, “If it breaks, we will die.”
The next morning, Lynnet called the silver swan. He asked the Prince to shoot the egg with the silver bow that lay in a chest near the bed. The Prince followed the silver swan’s instructions. As soon as the egg broke, the giant sisters fell with a crash and died.

The silver swan took the Prince and Lynnet back to their kingdom where they married and lived happily thereafter.
