One day, a gypsy was travelling through a town with his Donkey. He reached the market as he wished to sell his Donkey. He said, “My Donkey is a hard worker. He can also talk.” But everyone made fun of him, “Donkeys don’t talk! This one cannot be different.”
But the gypsy patiently replied, “He is different. He repeats the last sentence you say even though he does not understand the meaning.”
A Baker standing near by heard the gypsy. Though he did not believe in the gypsy yet he bought the Donkey as he needed someone to carry the heavy loads of flour. He paid the gypsy and took the Donkey home.
Next morning, the Baker told his family, “I am going to the mill and I am taking the Donkey with me. But this miller cheats me. So, I will come back and weigh the flour. All millers are wretches!” The Baker took the Donkey to the mill. As he reached the mill, he met the Miller. As the Donkey saw the Miller, he loudly shouted, “All millers are wretches!”
The Baker, now embarrassed, immediately apologised to the angry Miller. He explained that the Donkey did not understand the word he said. He just repeated what he heard. This made the Miller furious and he asked, “But who said this in front of him? Was it you Baker?” He got the Baker thrown out of his mill.
On his way back home, the Baker thought, ‘From now on, I would only say good things in front of the Donkey.’ And as he changed his words, everyone started liking him and the Baker felt happier.
