Once, the new King of Tree Spirits announced, “Each spirit should choose a tree to live in.” A wise tree spirit, the leader of a large clan, who was the Bodhisattva in his previous birth, advised his members, “Choose forest trees and not single trees in towns and villages.” Most tree spirits settled down in the forest trees. However, one foolish spirit said, “Tree spirits in towns and villages receive the best offerings from humans.” Thus, a number of tree spirits moved into big trees looked after by people. One day, a huge storm struck the kingdom. It blew up all the single trees in the villages and the towns. However, the trees in the forest, which supported one another, did not break or fall in the strong wind. The tree spirits in the villages and the towns had to return to the forest, as they had lost their homes.
