The Troublesome Dwarfs

Reid was upset. Something or the other was always going wrong. His socks were missing or his shoes were in the wrong place or the cookie jar was empty. ‘I have to catch the trouble makers,’ Reid thought. That night Reid kept awake and saw five thumb-sized dwarfs come through the window. They spoilt his work and threw his toys around. The next night, Reid hung five socks under the window. Then he hid himself under his study table. At nightfall, the dwarfs jumped right into the socks trap. Reid quickly closed the mouth of all the socks and said, “Who are you? Why have you been creating trouble for me?” They replied, “We are dwarfs. We enjoy troubling children, but we promise never to trouble you again. Please release us, for if we are found in a house at daybreak we will die.” Reid set them free. The naughty dwarfs never troubled children again.
