Once, Master Narada Maha Thera told his disciples about the truth of life. He said, “An elephant was chasing a man. The man decided to hide in a well, but there was a deadly snake at the bottom of the well. So, the man hung from a thorny creeper growing along the rim of the well. Just then, two mice started eating the creeper. From above, honey was dripping from a beehive. The man could go neither up nor down, and his only support was being eaten away. But he started drinking up the honey, ignoring the dangers around him. The Buddha offered to help him. However, the man was too busy enjoying the honey, and refused to take his help. In life, we face many difficulties. But if we become involved in only the pleasures like the man, we will never take the help of the Buddha, and will remain stuck there.”
Moral: All pleasures are temporary.
