Once, there lived a Shepherd in a village. He had a big flock of Sheep. He also owned a Dog that helped him with the Sheep.
Every day, the Shepherd would take his Sheep to the farm to graze the fresh and green grass. While the Sheep ate the grass, the Dog would stroll around them. The Shepherd would give him chunks of meat and pat him on the back.
At the end of the day, they would all walk back to the village. The Sheep did not like the Dog. They felt that the Dog was proud of himself and did not talk to them.
One day, all the Sheep went to the Shepherd and said, “Dear Master, we want to talk to you. The Sheep are always in the scare of the wolves. We have to be very careful about our lambs and the wolves can easily pick them and take them away. Yet, you only give us grass to eat. The grass grows freely and you do not pay for it. On the other hand, the Dog keeps wandering around all day and he does not do anything. Yet, you give him meat and appreciate him all the time. This is not fair on your part.”
The Shepherd heard them calmly.
The Dog heard all that the Sheep had said and jumped into the conversation. “You should be grateful to me instead of calling me worthless. While I wander around you, I make sure that no wolf comes close to you. If it was not for me, you would all have been killed by now.”
The Sheep felt ashamed of themselves and walked away quietly.
