The Wicked Prince

Once upon a time, there lived a Prince who was very proud and wicked. He built up a huge army and set out to conquer all the kingdoms in the world. He would wipe out cities and all the people in it. He and his armies destroyed farms and field, plundered the land for gaining wealth and chased and killed anyone they could find.

He would drag the rulers of other kingdoms whom he had defeated through the streets in chains. He often tied them chained them and exhibited them through the streets of the cities where once they had ruled. At feasts he treated them like dogs, chaining them at his feet and throwing scraps from his plate to them. Everyone was terrified of even hearing his name. He felt very pleased with all this.
In his own city and kingdom he built palaces and gardens and put up his own statues, and people praised him. So, he did not bother about the misery in his land so long as his own people flattered him.

‘What a wonderful prince I am!’ he thought, ‘Even the people in my kingdom think so. No one is more powerful or magnificent than I am in the whole world!’
He had put up his statues in gardens and the market places. Then he wanted to put up them up in the churches and temples as well. But the holy men warned him not to do this. “God is greater than all, even greater than Your Majesty,” they advised him, “So, we cannot disobey God and put your statues in the places of worship.”
“Very well then,” said the arrogant Prince, “I shall have to conquer God too!”
He got a huge ship specially built by the skilled ship makers for the war. It was painted in brilliant colours like a peacock’s tail. A peacock’s face was harnessed at the front top of the ship. There were bright red eye-holes in front of the ship. Inside each of the eyes was the mouth of a gun barrel. The Prince could fire the gun from inside the ship. The most amazing thing about the ship was that it could fly.

The ship took off taking the Prince into the sky to conquer God. The Prince watched the land below him getting smaller and smaller in the distance. The mountains and rivers, the seas and lakes, the fields and farms, looked tiny. He watched till he had gone well above the clouds.
God sent one of his mighty angels to defeat the Prince. The Prince fired at the angel who had spread his great shining wings. A bullet hurt the angel and a drop of his blood fell on the ship.

Shedding an angel’s blood was very bad. Its weight smashed the ship and sent it spinning down to earth, where it was crashed among trees in a forest.
The Prince was dazed and injured, but he did not learn anything from the defeat. He was so arrogant that he once again attacked God. He ordered many more flying ships to be built. The workers took seven years to build a huge fleet of flying ships. He collected an enormous army on to the ships and took off once more to conquer God.
This time he saw a dark cloud coming at him. God had sent a huge swarm of gnats that bit and stung the Prince. He tried to slash at them with his sword in order to kill them. But they simply kept coming.
Finally, one gnat got into his ear and bit him severely. The Prince was savagely tormented by the pain. In a few minutes, he lay dead.

No one mourned for the Prince. His own soldiers laughed to see the mighty Prince, who wanted to attack God, killed by one little gnat!
