The Wise Old Man

It was a chilly winter evening. An old man waited for a ride across the river. Soon, he watched several horsemen coming by. He let the first one pass by and then another. Finally, the last horseman came. The old man caught the horseman’s eye and said, “Sir, would you mind giving an old man a ride?” The horseman replied, “Sure thing.” The horseman took the old man to his destination. Then he said, “Sir, I notice that you let several other horsemen pass by without making an effort to secure a ride. Then I came up and you immediately asked me for a ride. Why?” The old man said, “I looked into the eyes of the other horsemen and immediately saw there was no concern for my situation. But when I looked into your eyes, I saw kindness and compassion.” The horseman was impressed by the old man’s words.
