The Wise Young Man

A king had a beautiful daughter for whom he wanted a brave and wise son-in-law. So, he built an underground palace and hid the princess inside it. Then he announced, “Whosoever finds the princess, shall marry her. But if someone tries and fails, then he must die.”

Many young men wanted to marry the princess. But no one wanted to risk his life. But a handsome and clever young man named John took up this challenge. John disguised himself in golden sheepskin and persuaded his shepherd friend to take him to the king. The shepherd took the sheep to the King. The King wanted to buy it but the shepherd lent it to the King only for three days. The King took the sheep to the underground palace and gave it to the princess. She was overjoyed. After the King had left, John threw off the sheepskin. The princess was amazed to see him and fell in love with him. She told John, “When you tell my father that you have found me, he will change my maids and me into ducks, and will ask you to recognise me. At that opportune time, I will turn my head back, and clean my wings.”

Three days later, the shepherd took away his sheep from the palace. Next day, John went to the King, saying, “Sir, I will find your daughter.” Then, he led the way to the underground palace. The King immediately changed the princess and all the maids into ducks and asked John to recognise the princess. The princess began to clean her wings with her beak and John pointed to her. The King was happy to marry his daughter to the wise and brave young John.
