The Wizard’s Gift

A very long time ago, there lived two friends, a goldsmith and a tailor. One day, while travelling, they heard strange music.

“Such lovely music!” exclaimed the tailor. “Let us find out where it is coming from,” said the goldsmith.

The two friends walked towards the top of the hill from where the music seemed to come. There, they saw men and women holding hands, singing and dancing around a bonfire. In the middle of the group sat an old wizard. He saw the two friends and called out to them.

The wizard said, “I will fulfil all your wishes. Pick up two pieces of charcoal from the heap and take them home.”

The goldsmith and the tailor picked up the charcoal pieces and went back. They stayed in an inn for the night. The next morning when they woke up, they saw gold coins in their coat pockets. The charcoal had turned into gold. The two friends jumped with joy.

“We are rich now and can fulfil all our dreams,” said the tailor, happily. “I’m so thankful to the wizard, but maybe he can help us a little more,” said the greedy goldsmith. He asked the tailor to go with him to the hill again, but the tailor refused.

So, the goldsmith went alone, carrying two empty sacks. When he reached the top of the hill, he saw the same thing as before. People were singing and dancing around the bonfire and the wizard was sitting in the middle. Again, the wizard called the goldsmith to him.

But this time, the excited goldsmith did not wait for the wizard to tell him to pick up the charcoal pieces. He immediately ran and filled charcoal into his two sacks and left. The wizard watched and laughed.

The excited goldsmith could not sleep the whole night. He thought, ‘In the morning, I will have two sacks full of gold.’ But there was only charcoal in the sacks when he opened them in the morning. And he was most upset to see that a huge hump had grown on his back. The tailor was sad to see his friend’s condition and said, “I hope you have learnt your lesson. Do not be greedy.” Saying this, he shared some of his gold coins with the goldsmith. But the goldsmith had to live with the ugly hump for the rest of his life.
