In the forest busy pecking at the bark of a tree is a woodpecker. It is very colourful. It has a crimson head and green and yellow feathers. Tok-tok-tok–he goes on pecking in the hope of getting to eat some insects. His favourite are the ants though. He catches them by his long thread-like tongue. He also builds beautiful nests in the hollow of trees. But as he is pecking away, he is disturbed by the cry of a jay just a short distance away. The jay is like the custodian of the forest warning the birds of any danger lurking near them. He has a nice feathery coat. He loves to eat acorns. He has a bad habit of attacking other birds’ nests and eating their eggs and young ones. But he does not care a fig.
