Thornback skates are bottom dwelling rays inhabiting mud, sand or gravel beds. They are 105-120 cm long and weigh 18 kg. It has a flattened, disc-shaped body, broad pectoral fins and a narrow, long tail. The upper surface and tail is covered with numerous thorns. They feed on fish, crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling creatures. Lifespan is 15 years.
