Once Al-Utbi was sitting amongst educated men, where everybody was telling the stories of the folk. When the discussion arrived at the stories of lover, each of them said his. Out of them, one old man remained silent until everybody spoke, and then asked if he could share something with all, they might not have ever heard of. He began:
“My daughter loved a youth but we were not aware of it. The youth though loved a singing girl, yet ironically loved my daughter. One day in an assembly, both the youth and the girl chanted a few couplets in which he proposed to die for the girl to prove his true love to her. And soon after he laid his head and was dead.
When I returned home and narrated what happened to the youth, my daughter also committed suicide. The next morning on our way to the burial, we met a third funeral; that was of the singing girl, who did the same after hearing of my daughter’s death. Thereafter, all three were buried together.”
