It is customary for the people of the west of Yunnan, to place a tile cat in the middle of a ridge on the top of their house. This cat is supposed to protect the family by eating up monsters and keeping away evil spirits. Before it is placed, a ritual is carried out involving incantations, sacrifices and prayers. This tile cat is a reflection of the pursuit of a safe and happy life.
