Tile fish live in self-made burrows in sandy areas near coral reefs. They grow 11–125 cm long and weigh up to 30 kg. Their yellow-brown or grey bodies are slender and elongated with long dorsal and anal fins. They feed on small benthic invertebrates, crustaceans, molluscs, worms, sea urchins and small fish. Their lifespan is 39-46 years.
